Summer Pet Heat Safety: Protecting Your Pets During the Texas Heat
Summer in Central Texas means sunshine, longer days, and dangerously high temperatures. Summer pet heat safety is often overlooked, but pets rely on us to recognize when it’s simply too hot for outdoor activities. Veterinary experts at the American Veterinary Medical Association warn that heatstroke can develop quickly in pets and can become life-threatening within minutes.
At Palmer Pet Care, your pet’s safety always comes before sticking to a routine. That’s why I adjust my dog walking services during periods of excessive heat to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and burned paw pads.
Why Summer Heat Is So Dangerous for Dogs
Dogs don’t cool themselves the same way humans do. Instead of sweating over most of their bodies, they primarily regulate their temperature through panting and limited sweating through their paw pads.
When air temperatures climb into the 90s, sidewalks, asphalt, and artificial turf can become much hotter than the surrounding air. According to the National Weather Service, extreme heat conditions can make surfaces significantly hotter than the air temperature, increasing risk for both people and pets. These surfaces can burn sensitive paw pads very quickly.
Heat-related illnesses can develop before you know it, especially in:
- Puppies and senior dogs
- Brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boxers
- Overweight pets
- Dogs with heart or respiratory conditions
- Pets with thick or dark-colored coats
Signs of Heat Exhaustion
If your dog experiences any of these symptoms, move them to a cool area immediately and contact your veterinarian:
- Excessive panting
- Brick red or pale gums
- Heavy drooling
- Weakness or stumbling
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Confusion or disorientation
- Collapse

My Summer Heat Dog Walking Policy
During periods of excessive heat, I may modify your pet’s walk to prioritize their safety.
Depending on conditions, your scheduled walk may become:
- A shorter potty break
- A shaded sniffy walk
- Extra indoor playtime and enrichment
- Fresh water refill and cooling break
- Interactive games inside your home
Every decision is made based on the current temperature, humidity, pavement conditions, your pet’s age, breed, health, and overall comfort.
My goal isn’t simply to “complete the walk.” My goal is to keep your pet, healthy, and safe.

Summer Heat Safety Tips for Pet Owners
Even when you’re home, there are several simple ways to help your pet stay comfortable during the summer:
- Walk early in the morning or after sunset whenever possible.
- Always provide access to fresh, cool water.
- Never leave pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
- Test pavement with the back of your hand.
- If it’s too hot for you to comfortably hold for several seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws!
- Consider puzzle toys or indoor games instead of vigorous outdoor exercise during the hottest part of the day.
